A Day in the Life of a Fashion Graduate Student – Part 2

Did you ever wonder if majoring in fashion was for you? Then this series is the series for you!

In my first post of a day in the life, grad school wasn’t so bad. I had a million snow days and a million opportunities at my finger-tips.  It’s still the same, but this time the snow is really causing a problem. All projects are behind and not to mention lost class time. The thing with any college is that snow days don’t get made up and professors have to scramble to catch up. My one class, as I mentioned, we are working with Majestic (the jersey company). Now this is awesome expect for one problem. We have no idea who the industrial design students are in our group. There’s always that one student who thinks they’re all that and a bag of chips that needs everything done their way. How are we supposed to come up with a better product when we are just the ones who can come up with ideas and have no clue how the mechanics of everything works? In that same class, we have to make a piece of jewelry using a 3D Printer. Cool right? NOT! They don’t even teach us how to use it, we kind of have to rely on the help of other hoping and praying they have the time to help us.

Besides all of that, grad school has been a piece of cake. My grades have been fabulous because they are nothing but papers. At the end of the day, if you are kick ass at writing papers then Grad School would be a piece of cake ;)

I even have a great group for my product development class and a great group for my technology in fashion class (minus the project with the undergrads).  And reading fashion blogs and WWD are considered homework! I mean what more could a girl want?!

Here are some tips for surviving any kind of fashion school:
·      Know the latest trends and keep with trade publications like WWD
·      Read fashion blogs
·      Keep up with the new and upcoming brands
·      Always support the little people
·      Stay on top of your readings and assignments
·      Don’t take on my than you can chew
·      And lastly, you don’t have to dress like a fashionista everyday to class. You just look dumb. You’re only going to class, ditch the heels, they’re fine for every now and then but everyday is just a little much.

So, if you want fashion to be your dream, go for it! If I can do it while working part time at Edible Arrangements, running my own Etsy shop, running a website and having a boyfriend, well, anyone can do it!

Winter Blues

I don't know about you guys, but I'm having the winter blues! We've had a brief few days of sunshine and warm weather here in NJ, so I bought the flowers above to celebrate.

After the snow ended I decided to get out the winter blues and head to polyvore! I took the colors from the flowers and decided to do a little inspirational shopping!

Getting Over the Winter Blues

My number one choice from my board, the Himalayan salt lamp! They are the perfect addition to you room or family room! Not only do they look beautiful, but when the salt it is heated up, it is known to have special properties. Here is an excerpt from the website: http://www.himalayansaltshop.com/

What is a Salt Lamp?

  • These salt lamps are made of natural Himalayan crystal salt mined from underground salt mines in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains
  • The beautiful orange-reddish Himalayan crystal salt is mounted on a wooden base
  • This crystal salt is hundreds of millions of years old and, as a result, has special properties and high mineral content
  • Heat from the bulb (in our salt lamps) or flame (in our candle holders) causes the salt to emit negative ions
  • These negative ions bond with the pollutants in the air (positive ions) and neutralize them
  • Also, the newly bonded ions become heavier and fall to the ground removing them from the air circulation
  • In addition, these negative ions combat electro-smog caused by electronic devices operating in the home
  • Symptoms from asthma, allergies, and other illnesses can also subside from the effects of these products
  • Concisely, these products cleanse the air naturally and are extremely beautiful
Salt Lamps for your Home
Salt Lamp will cleanse the air around you via natural ionization.

So not only can you beat the winter blues with a Himalayan salt lamp, but you can add something that even looks beautiful!

When it comes to makeup i normally have my typical go to brands and products. I also have a horrible skin problem and CANNOT wear anything with oil in it. I kept running out my of custom made foundation from my dermatologist and decided to give Benefit's oxygen wow foundation a shot. I wrote about it as an alternative to custom foundation and

all I can say is WOW! They are not joking! Despite it having no oil, it keeps your skin fresh and moisturized all day and gives your skin a fantastic glow!!! You don't even need more than a pump!! Next I'm going for their primer!
Then out of the corner of my eye I saw this spray to control shine from Urban Decay so I picked it up. I had a sample of their other makeup setting spray (that is also oil free BTW) and I am so glad I did! It helps control my shine and boy so I have a lot of shine to control! Having over active oil glands is a big pain but more and more companies are seeing how  bad oil is for young skin. I promise to continue my Oily Skin no more series ASAP! This is a huge problem that we can all avoid!
While I was in sephora I decided to take my normal 50 laps around to look at all the beauty items that I don't need and found the most beautiful thing to ever cross my . A MARC BY MARC JACOBS BEAUTY section! SAY WHATTTTTTT! Yes, ladies, Marc By Marc Jacobs Beauty.

His line is still fairly new, but is everything I would ever want in make up! His lipstick is a gel that is super long lasting and does not come off, even when I give my boyfriend a kiss (oh lala). The color happy ending is the one I purchased and it is the most perfect pink I have ever laid my eyes on! But it doesn't stop there! He has nail polish, eye shadow, blush, foundation and of course eyeliner. I purchased the blue shade and it is absolutely perfect! It is even the color they are showing for spring and summer so what more could I want?! ...maybe the rest of everything that fabulous man makes...but beggars can't be choosers ;)

And everyone should go listen to CASH-CASH 's new song Take Me Home! They're Jersey natives too ;p

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend!

PS! Stay tuned for more information on my Spring / Summer line as well as my collab with Blue Bird Home Decore in Troy, New York!

Crystals are a Girl's New Best Friend

Crystals are a girl’s new best friend.

With yoga and chakra balancing becoming more and more popular so has crystals.  They are said to bring harmony and balance to those who are near.  I was never a believer in crystals; I just always thought they looked cool. After being around them so much while doing yoga I couldn’t help but jump on the bandwagon. But I’m not the only one jumping on the bandwagon when it comes to making crystal jewelry.  Major designers have been jumping on the bandwagon too.

Here's some pieces that can be found on Urban Outfitters website.

Below are pieces you can find on my etsy page: Love, Light & Lipstick! etsy.com/shop/lovelightlipstick

Well, crystal lovers, that's all for now! Be sure to check back for more on crystals!

Love and Light,

A Day in the Life of a Fashion Grad Student

Well, the first week of graduate school is done and over with and I could not be happier. But apparently people who have never attended a fashion class think I’m idiot who wasted my life and don't know a single thing about business or engineering.

But if you have never been in one you’ll never fully understand what it means to be a merchandiser.  The field has changed dramatically over the years and I highly recommend that field if you are thinking about going into fashion.

In my grad program, not only are there no exams in the classes I’m taking, but I actually get to do things I want and learn things that actually matter!  Everything I learned in my undergraduate career was a repeat of high school for me. Nothing was new and exciting and the information almost seemed outdated.  For my technology in fashion I get to use a 3D printer for my favorite thing of all, JEWELRY! After that I get to make a video game and then work with companies to make wearable technology. How cool is that?! I do have to work with other majors and didn’t have the best experience the last time I had to do that, but hopefully I have better luck this time!

Have a wonderful weekend full of love light and laughter!
